The Washington Redskins refurbished their quarterback situation during the 2012 NFL Draft, using the #2 overall pick on Robert Griffin III and later using a fourth-round pick (102nd overall) on Kirk Cousins. Of course Griffin took the league by storm, leading the Redskins to a division title while winning Offensive Rookie of the Year. But he suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his right knee during Washington’s playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks, putting his status for Week 1 of the 2013 season in serious doubt. Griffin has stated, obviously, that his goal is to be ready for the start of next season, but at the same time he has said he won’t jeopardize the rest of his career by rushing back into action. Everyone’s expectations for a player’s recovery from serious knee surgery have been altered by the performance of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson last season, since he was ready to go for Week 1 after suffering his injury on Christmas Eve 2011 and nearly set the single-season rushing yardage record. Griffin of course suffered his injury at bit later than that, and how well he is progressing in his rehab won’t become clear for at least another few months. If Griffin misses one or more games at the start of next season, could Cousins become a good option for fantasy owners? Cousins saw action in three regular season games last season while filling in for an injured Griffin, including one start in Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns. He performed very well in that game, going 26-for-37 for 329 yards with two touchdowns and one interception along with 22 rushing yards on three carries. Cousins clearly does not possess the athletic gifts Griffin does, but in that one full game he showed he is capable of being an NFL starter. Griffin’s health will be one of the biggest things for fantasy owners to keep an eye on during training camp, and we can be sure Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan will do his best to keep everyone in the dark about his status for Week 1. Cousins’ fantasy value for 2013 is obviously tied to and dependent on Griffin’s progress as next season gets closer, limiting his appeal in single-season leagues, but at minimum Cousins is becoming a worthy speculative flier for those in deep dynasty leagues.
